Anime: Space Dandy (2014)

In the world of anime , there are certain works that shine but unfortunately go unnoticed by the majority of the public. A recent fan thread on a popular anime forum brought these hidden gems to light: “ Amazing anime that you consider to be a masterpiece but aren't known or popular in the community .”

The most recurring mentions are praised for its deep narrative, complex characters and masterful execution , but that it has not achieved the same popularity as other more commercial titles.

Anime: Watamote (2013)

So why do these series go unnoticed by the rest of the public? There are several factors that can contribute to this. Firstly, marketing plays a crucial role in promoting an anime. If a series doesn't receive a solid advertising campaign or isn't backed by a renowned studio, it's likely to go unnoticed by many viewers.

Additionally, a series' genre and style can influence its popularity. Some masterpieces focus on dark or mature themes that may not appeal to a wider audience. Likewise, a unique animation style or complex narrative may be less accessible to those seeking lighter or easier-to-consume entertainment.

Anime: Inuyashiki (2017)

Despite these challenges, forum members are determined to highlight these hidden gems and share their love for these lesser-known masterpieces . His hope is that through discussions like this, more people can discover and appreciate these series that deserve to be recognized as anime masterpieces.

Below you can find the incredible animes that went unnoticed by the majority of the public.

  • “Girls Last Tour, both the anime and manga, was the masterpiece I didn't know I was looking for when I started reading it on a whim. After a few chapters, I discovered that there was also an anime. So, I started from the first episode. I found that the anime was diligently faithful to the source. They also added some original scenes to the anime, which improved the experience. After watching the fifth episode, I realized how much I craved something so provocative and immensely creative. The anime ends at a point in the manga where the story goes deeper and deeper and touches on some very, very interesting themes. I can’t help but recommend this masterpiece.”
  • “Steam Boy: Film from the creators of Akira that fell into oblivion. Even more epic than Akira and with a great story.”
  • “Paranoia Agent: From the creators of Paprika, it loses a little at the end, and it's procedural, which isn't that popular. But the themes it includes are very relevant and are brilliantly covered. Only surpassed by Mushi-shi.”
  • “Pom-Poko: Yes, it's from Studio Ghibli, but it's very ignored. It appears light at first glance and is easy to discard. But it is very strong in its themes. Completely unflappable and seriously brutal beneath her literally cute appearance. I love this movie.”
  • “Space Dandy: It has its place alongside his spiritual trilogy with Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. It's ignored because it's a comedy, unlike the other two. But it's equally moving, heartfelt, and provocative if you pay attention. With a great ending at the end that makes you want to watch it again. If you’ve seen Watanabe’s other two series, don’t skip this one.”

Other incredible animes were highlighted in this debate by fans.

  • “ Fune wo Amu (The Great Passage) was everything I could want from a slow, adult workplace drama, with little at stake and a (to me) very relatable and interesting protagonist.”
  • “ Seirei no Moribito . It’s an absolute tragedy that they didn’t adapt more of the novel.”
  • “ Aria . It's the gold standard of Slice Of Life, and the anime that takes the “Life” part most seriously of the entire genre.”
  • “ Yuri Kuma Arashi . I just finished it and I wish I had heard about it sooner.”
  • “Well, I only watched the first season, but for me Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei was a masterpiece. I rated it a 10, I just haven't watched the other seasons yet. I don’t know if it’s very popular, but I know I don’t see it mentioned very often anywhere.”
  • “ Blame! It always deserves more love, atmospheric manga (like Girls Last Tour) are fantastic.”
  • “ Shinsekai Yori ; I see it mentioned here when people ask for certain recommendations, but beyond that it seems almost forgotten.”
  • “ Witch Hat Atelier (manga). The art is absolutely beautiful, the characters and world are really deep and well thought out. Furthermore, the story has a lot to offer. My only problem is that there are not enough volumes (13).”

Finally, I wanted to know the opinion of the people here at AnimeNew, which incredible animes do you consider to be good ones that went unnoticed.
