Last week, a TikTok video had a lot of impact when it said that the MAPPA used AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the animation of the 2nd season of Jujutsu Kaisen . However, Samuel Deats , the animation director for Castlevania , gave a response on top of the video, indicating that studio MAPPA did not use AI.

Ghosting in anime isn't AI. It's a technique used to pass the Harding Test, which is a test that determines the level of risk for epileptic seizures. Ghosting has been around since well before current generative AI technology. https://t.co/tAMY2xdycq

The video in question alleges that MAPPA used AI to animate Jujutsu Kaisen episodes to cut costs at work. However, Samuel Deats made a post about this, saying that the animators used a technique called Ghosting , which does not rely on the use of AI.
“Ghosting in anime is not AI. It is a technique used to pass the Harding Test, which is a test that determines the level of risk of epileptic seizures. Ghosting has been around since long before current generative AI technology.”
The Harding Test is a test carried out on sequences of images for cinema and TV to prevent epilepsy attacks in viewers. The test then analyzes the sequence of frames to determine whether the images may pose such a risk. For the test to be successful, studios like MAPPA usually use Ghosting. This way, the images are smooth in the animation and pass the Harding Test.
Synopsis:
The story therefore follows Yuji Itadori, a high school student who becomes involved with a secret society of sorcerers called Jujutsu Kaisen, who fight against curses, evil beings that haunt the world of the living. So, to protect his friends and innocent people, Yuji decides to join the jujutsu sorcerers as a student in training under the guardianship of Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer of all.
The first season of the anime premiered in October 2020 and had 24 episodes animated by studio MAPPA . The studio also handled the animation for the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 , which takes place a few years before the main series and tells the story of young Yuta Okkotsu.
