Jujutsu Kaisen – Animation Director Indicates AI Was Not Used in the Anime

Ghosting in anime isn't AI. It's a technique used to pass the Harding Test, which is a test that determines the level of risk for epileptic seizures. Ghosting has been around since well before current generative AI technology. https://t.co/tAMY2xdycq

The video in question claims that MAPPA used AI to animate the Jujutsu Kaisen episodes to cut costs. However, Samuel Deats posted about this, stating that the animators used a technique called ghosting , which doesn't rely on AI.
"Ghosting in anime is not AI. It's a technique used to pass the Harding Test, a test that determines the risk level of epileptic seizures. Ghosting has existed since long before current generative AI technology."
The Harding Test is a test performed on film and television image sequences to prevent epileptic seizures in viewers. The test analyzes the sequence of frames to determine whether the images pose such a risk. For the test to be successful, studios like MAPPA often use ghosting. This ensures smooth animation and passes the Harding Test.
Synopsis:
The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high school student who becomes involved with a secret society of sorcerers called Jujutsu Kaisen, who fight curses—evil beings that haunt the living world. So, to protect his friends and the innocent, Yuji decides to join the jujutsu sorcerers as a student-in-training under the tutelage of Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer of all.
The anime's first season premiered in October 2020 and consisted of 24 episodes, animated by MAPPA . The studio also animated the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 , which takes place a few years before the main series and tells the story of young Yuta Okkotsu.
