In an interview with Japanese media outlet Comic Natalie, Ootsuka discussed several aspects of MAPPA, including its founding and management. He also noted that when he took over as CEO, he already had ideas about how to survive in this industry.
It's difficult to achieve the same level of quality as Ufotable and Kyoto Animation, which are considered Japan's top animation studios. So Ootsuka ramped up his studio's productivity to quickly stand out in the market.
"Not in the small context of the animation industry, but as a company. When we thought about what we needed to do to achieve this, the first thing was to increase productivity. It's difficult to achieve the quality of Kyoto Animation and Ufotable in a short time, and it's too late for MAPPA to try to reach that level in 20 or 30 years. Therefore, we had to take a different approach than the studios that preceded us. So we thought about how we could produce a lot and gain experience while maintaining a high level of quality, while also branding the studio and entering the competition with these studios in the shortest possible time."
