Hideo Kojima, one of the most influential names in the gaming industry, has expressed concern about the lack of innovation in major AAA releases. According to the creator of Metal Gear Solid, many high-budget games seem increasingly similar, both visually and in terms of gameplay, and this diminishes his interest in such titles.

During a recent interview, Kojima highlighted that he prefers to follow independent productions, which he considers more daring and creative. For him, the excess of repetitive formulas in big-budget games hinders the industry's progress and makes the experience less exciting for players seeking novelty.

AAA games are repetitive and predictable, says Kojima

Kojima commented that, after watching recent presentations at major events like Summer Game Fest, he noticed that most AAA titles follow the same patterns. He cited settings with aliens or medieval creatures and gameplay systems that differ little from one another. The designer acknowledges that this type of experience appeals to many players, but argues that it is essential to present new ideas to keep the market vibrant.

Interest in indie games is growing

While major productions remain safe within familiar formulas, Kojima has turned his attention to independent games. According to him, indie games take risks that larger studios avoid, bringing more creative and surprising experiences. This pursuit of originality is what sustains his enthusiasm as a player and as a creator, also serving as inspiration for new projects from Kojima Productions.

New projects promise to break the mold

Despite his criticism of the current landscape, Kojima continues to develop experiences that aim to break expectations. After the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the studio is working on OD, described as a completely different proposition from what the public expects, and on Physint, which will mark his return to the action and stealth genre. For the director, creating something unique is what keeps his work relevant amidst so many similar games.
