Krafton has officially begun development on TERA 2, a direct sequel to one of the most iconic MMORPGs of the last decade. This confirmation comes alongside the formation of a new team within Bluehole Studio, the studio responsible for the original title.

Led by industry veterans, the project is still in its early stages, but it's already generating excitement among fans of the genre. The goal is to recapture the elements that made TERA a global phenomenon, combining nostalgia and technical innovation.

TERA 2 is in production with veterans from the original team

Krafton's new production is being led by Kang Sang-wook, a historic figure within the company. Known as the first employee of Bluehole Studio after the founders, Kang played an essential role in the creation of TERA and now returns as the project leader for its sequel. The development team was formed within Bluehole's Research and Development department, under the direct coordination of Jo Doo-in, the studio's current CEO.

Kang Sang-wook is also known for his involvement in other KRAFTON projects. One of them was the experimental Project Cowboy, in addition to his work training new developers through the internal Jungle program. His presence at the helm of TERA 2 is seen as a sign that the sequel intends to maintain the spirit of the original game, focusing on mechanics geared towards an audience passionate about traditional MMORPGs.

MMORPG with classic DNA and a focus on non-targeting combat

Although not many details have yet been released about TERA2, initial information indicates that the new game will maintain the MMORPG genre and may revive the non-targeting combat system, one of the great differentiators of the original title. This type of mechanic demands more skill and reflexes from players, contributing to more dynamic and immersive combat.

Released in 2011, TERA pioneered this format and stood out for its advanced graphics for the time, as well as a rich open world and fluid gameplay. TERA2's aim seems to be to update this formula to current standards, rekindling the interest of veteran players while attracting a new generation of fans of the genre.

Lasting legacy and community expectations

Even with the official closure of the Korean servers in 2022, TERA continues to live on through private servers and its console version, which remains active. With KRAFTON's current focus on titles like PUBG and side projects, the announcement of TERA 2 represents a strategic move to diversify the company's portfolio. The absence of major MMORPG titles in KRAFTON's current lineup further reinforces the weight this sequel could have within the industry.

What to expect from the future of TERA 2

The development of TERA 2 is still in its early stages, with a small team and many details still open. However, the direct involvement of influential figures and the historical relevance of the original game create a real expectation that KRAFTON is preparing something big for the MMORPG scene.

Thus, if it manages to balance technical innovation with the essence of the original game, TERA2 could become a new landmark within the genre. Now, all that remains is to await the next official updates and closely follow what Bluehole Studio is preparing for this highly anticipated return.
