The Black Butler manga debuted in Square Enix's Monthly G magazine in 2006 and currently has 17 volumes, with nearly 18 million copies in print, including those published in 42 countries and territories. The manga inspired an anime TV series in 2008, a stage play in 2009, and a second season that followed in 2010 with a new butler and master.

Finally, the manga won the top prize in the shōnen manga category at the Japan Expo Awards in France in 2010 and the Best Manga International Award at Animagic in Germany in 2011.
