Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Manga author is convicted of tax evasion

Author Nekokurage (Erika Ikeda), responsible for the manga of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (Apothecary Diaries), received a 10-month prison sentence and a fine of 11 million yen (approximately US$70,600) for tax evasion.

However, the prison sentence will be suspended if Nekokurage maintains good behavior over the next three years.

The accusation against Ikeda is of not declaring around 260 million yen (around R$8.6 million) in income and of evading approximately 47 million yen (around R$1.5 million) in taxes between 2019 and 2021 According to the IRS, the undeclared funds, including profits obtained from the sale of the manga, were used to purchase properties.

During the trial, Ikeda stated that he had no intention of avoiding payment and that he was “planning to pay everything in one go later.” Nekokurage filed tax petitions over several years without meeting the stipulated deadlines.

Therefore the editor of Nekokurage also stated that he warned the author to submit a statement, otherwise the situation would become bad. Furthermore, the original creator of The Apothecary Diaries novels, Natsu Hyūga, advised Nekokurage to "consult a tax accountant".
