In episode 14 of the second season of the anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries), released on April 11, Maomao solved another mystery involving one of her high-ranking concubines. Furthermore, despite the bovine bezoar distracting her from Jinshi's "frog," she won't be able to escape the false eunuch anytime soon.
The previous episode was a breather for Maomao and anime fans, who were able to rest their hearts after the iconic "frog scene." However, in this episode, the girl returned to her role as Jinshi's private detective and set off to investigate the Diamond Palace, where, apparently, a ghost resided.
In case you don't remember, in episode 13, Maomao encountered Lishu in the public bathing area. This incident generated some curiosity, as high-ranking concubines have baths in their palaces. After speaking with the concubine, the apothecary discovered that a ghost was haunting the bathing area of the Diamond Palace.
Thus, Maomao was tasked with solving the mystery once again. The Apothecary Diaries isn't a work involving the supernatural, so all cases are solved with some scientific explanation, such as the "ghost" in this episode, which was actually just a reflection in the copper mirror—a relic left by Lishu's mother—and the steam rising from the gap in the floor, which generated wind and caused the curtain to sway.
In Kusuriya no Hitorigoto the ladies-in-waiting are not trustworthy
So far, the anime has made it clear that, unfortunately, Lishu still suffers abuse from her ladies-in-waiting. This situation seems to be a recurring theme in the story, as Lihua, one of the high-ranking concubines, has also experienced this.
The situation arouses compassion, because, despite being the Emperor's concubine, Lishu is just a little girl who is alone and needs to survive in a place that feels like a battlefield.
However, the Jinshi took advantage of his visit to the Diamond Palace and resolved the issue, once and for all putting the ladies-in-waiting in their place, which made the episode worthwhile. Furthermore, the reprimand was so severe that even Maomao was frightened, and we know that this is not common.
What to expect from the next episode
The opening may have changed, but the quality hasn't. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) doesn't disappoint, and the episodes deliver each scene with excellence, such as the moments when Maomao is excited about something or her genius in solving each mystery effectively.
The next episode will adapt chapter 68 of the manga, titled " The Rumored Eunuch and the Ice Cream ." In it, Maomao will demonstrate her talent by helping Xiaolan atone for a terrible mistake. Furthermore, Jinshi is ready to try, once again, to reveal his true identity to the apothecary. Will he succeed?
