Episode Analysis

In episode 19 of the second season of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto , released on May 23rd, Maomao attends a village festival and discovers something intriguing about the local population. Furthermore, the protagonist, who decides to investigate a village warehouse, encounters a suspicious person again. Now, Maomao seems closer to uncovering the connection between the season's mysteries.

At the beginning of the episode, Maomao participates in the annual village festival. There, everyone wears fox masks, a figure considered a deity by the villagers. According to Shisui, in narrating the village's history, a specific group of people originally inhabited the area. However, over time, new residents arrived from another nation.

However, not all the villagers accepted their presence, but because they taught valuable knowledge about farming, they stayed. Shisui explains that the fox deity represents the Westerners who brought knowledge. Furthermore, the girl reveals that many men in the village have difficulty distinguishing colors, as mentioned in episode 7, titled " The Sanctuary of Choice" .

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: The Green and Red Masks

During the festival, Maomao notices that many masks are painted green, whereas red is the most common color. After Shisui explains the history of the village, the protagonist realizes that the green masks belong to those who cannot distinguish between red and green. Intriguingly, Shisui herself wears a green mask, which may indicate that she also cannot distinguish between the colors, just as Shishou demonstrates in episode 40, titled " Fostered Evil ".

At the end of the celebration, the villagers burn the festival masks. During the occasion, Shisui intrigues Maomao when he says, melancholically, that "Unfulfilled wishes sink there to nourish the next harvest. Insects never survive the winter, they only leave their offspring." The phrase may be related to something that happened in the character's life or in the life of someone close to him.

The animation in Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is very beautiful, with vibrant colors and attention to detail. In episode 19, the festival scenes are particularly striking, especially the contrast between the starry sky and the fire during the burning of the masks.

The village shed and the discovery of Maomao

At the end of the episode, Maomao notices an old shed in the village where the rice cultivation is failing. Driven by curiosity, she decides to investigate. Inside the shed, she finds several feifas, weapons identical to the one used in the attempted assassination of Jinshi. While exploring, she sees one of the foreign envoys enter the shed along with Shenmei, a woman with a cold and cruel appearance.
