Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is reaching the culmination of the second season's mysteries, which are certainly connected to those of the previous season. Some open questions seem close to being resolved, and, as in the first season, it's likely that all the events have some connection and purpose.
Episode 42 , released on May 9th, shows that Jinshi is close to discovering the reason for Shisui and Suirei's involvement in Maomao's disappearance. Compared to episodes 40 and 41, which brought several revelations and left viewers' emotions running high, this episode was more subdued. However, it also brought a surprising discovery involving Consort Loulan of the Granada Palace.
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto shows Jinshi in an unexpected encounter with Shenlü
At the beginning of the episode, when Jinshi visits the Jade Palace, it is reported that Consort Gyokuyo has gone into labor and that there is no longer any risk of a breech birth. After visiting her, Jinshi learns from Gaoshun that the missing eunuch, who is actually Suirei, used to frequent the north cemetery, where the girls deflowered by the former emperor are buried.
At the cemetery, Jinshi meets Shenlü, the lady who works at the clinic. She, who was laying flowers for one of the servants who had passed away, is startled when he asks about Muhammad. However, what truly terrifies Shenlü is Jinshi's resemblance to the previous emperor, as she was one of the girls who suffered during his reign.
Jinshi is deeply shaken by the comparison, having preferred to believe throughout his life that he bore no resemblance to the previous emperor. Furthermore, Jinshi reflects on his past and reveals that, to escape his position as crown prince, he begged the current emperor to change his identity. This is how he began pretending to be a eunuch and went to the so-called "women's garden," where the consorts are kept.
Shenlü is frightened by the encounter and tries to ingest poison. However, the eunuchs with Jinshi manage to help her. This scene highlights, once again, the horrors and scars that the previous emperor still leaves on the women of the Palace, even after his death. Furthermore, knowing that Jinshi hates possessing any physical features of the man shows that he also repudiates everything the previous emperor represents.
Jinshi Discovers Something Surprising at the Granada Palace
After taking Shenlü to medical care, Jinshi realizes that the tomb she was visiting is that of Taihou, the servant who organized the gathering of horror stories, which occurred in episode 34, titled Haunted History . The servant was a lady-in-waiting to Loulan's mother, when she was a concubine in the Palace, before being handed over to Shishou.
Jinshi reflects on Taihou and remembers that she has a blood relative, a daughter she bore in the former emperor's reign. And, according to Jinshi's thoughts, it seems the servant's daughter may be related to Suirei. Thus, he goes to the Granada Palace to ask if Loulan knows the whereabouts of Taihou's daughter.
However, when Jinshi arrives at the Palace, he discovers that Loulan is missing and that a lady-in-waiting is pretending to be the consort. He becomes furious in a way he had never let on before and frightens the girl dressed as Loulan. After regaining his composure, Jinshi asks them to look for the consort, but they can't find her.
At the end of the episode, Lahan, the adopted son of strategist Lakan, shows Jinshi an intriguing document: the National Treasury Receipts Diary. Through the document, the crown prince discovers that the price of coffee beans has increased, even without a drought or locust infestation. Furthermore, the price of iron is also high, leading Lahan to suspect someone is constructing a large structure. However, there is no record of any possible construction.
This construction may be related to the village featured in the last episode, or it may be some other surprising structure. However, one thing is certain: only a few people could obtain so much metal, and the anime is close to revealing who is involved, as Lahan, apparently inheriting his adoptive father's intelligence, will begin an investigation.
The anime is close to revealing Shisui's true identity (Spoiler)
Now that it's been revealed that Loulan asks her ladies-in-waiting to impersonate her, it's clear that she and Shisui are one and the same. After all, it's no coincidence that someone took her place just when she's away with Maomao. Furthermore, Loulan was careful to hire ladies-in-waiting who somewhat resemble her, as the consort needs to ensure that someone can take her place if she finds herself disguised as Shisui.
Despite the revelation, the anime still hasn't clarified the consort's motive for such a disguise. Furthermore, it still needs to address the presence of one of the foreign envoys in the village where Maomao is staying, and the test Lakan performed on Shishou to determine if he can differentiate between red and green.
There are also other topics that should be revisited, such as Gaoshun's story about the sisters who couldn't leave their homes, which, by all indications, is related to the foreign envoys. Ultimately, everything that happened in the second season, as well as the previous one, is likely connected.
