Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is reaching the peak of its second season's mysteries, which are certainly connected to those of the previous season. Some open questions seem close to a solution and, just like in the first season, it's likely that all the events have some connection and a purpose.
Episode 42 , released on May 9th, shows that Jinshi is close to discovering the reason for Shisui and Suirei's involvement in Maomao's disappearance. Compared to episodes 40 and 41, which brought several revelations and left viewers' emotions on edge, the current episode was calmer. However, it also brought a surprising discovery involving Consort Loulan of Granada Palace.
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto shows Jinshi in an unexpected encounter with Shenlü
At the beginning of the episode, when Jinshi visits the Jade Palace, it is reported that Consort Gyokuyo has gone into labor and that there is no longer a risk of a breech birth. After visiting her, Jinshi discovers, through Gaoshun, that the missing eunuch, who is actually Suirei, used to frequent the cemetery on the north side, where the girls deflowered by the former emperor are buried.
In the cemetery, Jinshi encounters Shenlü, the woman who works at the clinic. She, who was placing flowers for one of the servants who had passed away, is startled when he asks about Maomao. However, what truly terrifies Shenlü is Jinshi's resemblance to the previous emperor, as she was one of the girls who suffered during his reign.
Jinshi is deeply shaken by the comparison, since throughout his life he preferred to believe that there was no resemblance whatsoever to the previous emperor. Furthermore, Jinshi reflects on his past and reveals that, to escape his position as crown prince, he begged the current emperor to change his identity. That is how he began pretending to be a eunuch and went to the so-called "garden of women," the place where the consorts reside.
Shenlü is frightened by the encounter and tries to ingest poison. However, the eunuchs who are with Jinshi manage to help her. This scene highlights, once again, the horrors and marks that the previous emperor still leaves, even after his death, on the women of the Palace. Furthermore, knowing that Jinshi hates possessing any physical trace of the man shows that he also repudiates everything the previous emperor represents.
Jinshi discovers something surprising at Granada Palace
After taking Shenlü for medical care, Jinshi realizes that the grave she was visiting belongs to Taihou, the maid who organized the gathering of horror stories, which occurred in episode 34, titled Haunted Story . The maid was a lady-in-waiting to Loulan's mother when she was a concubine in the Palace, before being given to Shishou.
Jinshi reflects on Taihou and remembers that she has a blood relative, a daughter she bore in the kingdom of the former emperor. And, according to Jinshi's thoughts, it seems that the servant's daughter may be related to Suirei. Therefore, he goes to Granada Palace to ask if Loulan knows the location of Taihou's daughter.
However, when Jinshi arrives at the Palace, he discovers that Loulan is not there and that there is a lady-in-waiting pretending to be the consort. He becomes furious at the situation, in a way he had never shown before, and frightens the girl dressed as Loulan. After regaining his composure, Jinshi asks them to look for the consort, but they cannot find her.
At the end of the episode, Lahan, the adopted son of strategist Lakan, shows Jinshi an intriguing document: the National Treasury Receipts Journal. Through the document, the crown prince discovers that the price of coffee beans has increased, even without drought or locust infestation. Furthermore, the price of iron is also high, leading Lahan to suspect that someone is building a large structure. However, there is no record of any such construction.
This structure may be related to the village shown in the last episode, or it could be some other surprising structure. However, one thing is certain: only a few people could obtain so much metal, and the anime is close to revealing who is involved, as Lahan, seemingly having inherited his adoptive father's intelligence, will begin an investigation.
The anime is close to revealing Shisui's true identity (Spoiler)
Now that it has been revealed that Loulan asks her ladies-in-waiting to impersonate her, it becomes clear that she and Shisui are the same person. After all, it's no coincidence that someone has taken her place precisely on the days when the girl is away with Maomao. Furthermore, Loulan was careful to hire ladies-in-waiting who, in a way, resemble her, since the consort needs to ensure that someone can take her place should she find herself disguised as Shisui.
Despite the revelation, the anime still hasn't made clear the reason for the consort's disguise. Furthermore, it hasn't addressed the presence of one of the foreign envoys in the village where Maomao is, nor the test Lakan conducted with Shishou to determine if he is unable to distinguish between red and green.
There are also other issues that need to be revisited, such as the story told by Gaoshun about the sisters who couldn't leave the house, which, it seems, is related to the foreign envoys. In the end, it's likely that everything that happened in the second season, as well as the previous one, is connected.
Unfortunately, viewers will have to wait a little longer than usual for the next revelations. According to the official network , episode 43 will only be released on May 23rd. On the 16th, a special program will be broadcast in place of the episode.
The fox village will be featured more prominently in the next episode

With so many surprising revelations, the second season of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is getting better and better. Incredible episodes like Ka Zuigetsu , Fomented Evil , and The Fox Village brought memorable scenes and breathtaking plot twists. Although the second season is in its final stages, there are still 6 episodes left that likely hold even more unexpected discoveries.
