Lazarus Ep. 7: Dr. Skinner's Sunken Islands

Episode 7 of Lazarus , released on May 18, follows the team once again on a search for Dr. Skinner. In episode 6, the Lazarus group encountered the Tower of Truth religious community, which worshipped the artificial intelligence Naga. When the AI was created, Dr. Skinner's brain was used as a model. Thus, in the current episode, through data left by Naga, they discover coordinates of underwater islands acquired by the scientist.

The anime Lazarus combines elements of older animation to build a narrative about a current and much-discussed topic. The story takes place in 2052, when the characters must confront two issues related to the future of humanity. Global warming is increasingly prevalent, and the day when the Hapuna drug will wipe out a large portion of the population is approaching.

The Lazarus team finds Dr. Skinner's sunken islands

As in other episodes, the team splits up to search for clues to Skinner's whereabouts. Each team heads to one of the islands he acquired. Doug goes to the Philippines, Axel goes to the Maldives, Leland goes to Taketomi, Chris goes to Tuvalu, and finally, Elaina remains behind the scenes monitoring the situation through the screens.

When they arrive at the site, they find nothing. However, they both reminisce about the beauty of nature and the rarity of finding clear skies and seas. Elaina even says that the only beautiful places are those where humans are absent. Chris, moved, reflects that what they are seeing is the real Earth, and that humans are destroying it. The scene is moving and accurately reflects what we are experiencing today.

Furthermore, there is a scene at the beginning of the episode in which a newspaper reports that the last block of Arctic ice has melted, and a video showing that Skinner predicted what would happen three years ago begins to go viral.

Although he doesn't discover the scientist's whereabouts, Axel Gilberto meets a man who claims to suffer from analgesia. In other words, he's incapable of feeling pain. Therefore, he never felt the need to ingest Hapuna. Furthermore, he reveals that most of the people who lived on that island suffered from analgesia. This information could be important in the future.

Elaina discovers Hirsch's secret

At the end of the episode, two interesting things happen that could be a hook for the next chapter. As Chris is leaving the island, she encounters a woman who seems to know her. What's strange is that the Lazarus team member is frightened by the encounter. It's possible the woman is someone who played an important role in Chris's life, or who somehow poses a threat.

Furthermore, this episode made it clear that Hirsch had a relationship with Dr. Skinner. She seems to know him well and confirms that he was a truly good person, but she also doesn't understand the reason behind the creation of Hapuna. Finally, Elaina finds a list of all the people affiliated with the Hague Institute, and Hirsch is on it, which leaves the young woman confused and surprised.

The episode features no action scenes; it emphasizes the narrative and the problem humanity is facing with global warming. Although Hapuna and global warming are two distinct problems, they are related. According to the information revealed so far, Dr. Skinner created the painkiller as a way to punish society for not caring about the planet's problems.

However, the true reason behind Hapuna's creation remains a mystery. Perhaps its creation was a way to unite people to search for a cure and, subsequently, save the planet together. It's likely that the motive wasn't simply revenge, and that Skinner truly had something bigger in mind when creating the painkiller. Now, with 14 days to go until the population's possible death, the Lazarus group must find the scientist as soon as possible.

The anime is available on the Max streaming platform, with Portuguese dubbing. The next episode is scheduled for release on May 25th. Stay tuned to AnimeNew for more information on Lazarus and everything related to the otaku world!
