Lazarus Ep. 8: Chris's Rescue

Episode 8 of Lazarus , released on May 25, features a slightly different narrative than what viewers are used to seeing in the anime. In the episode, the team interrupts their search for Dr. Skinner and organizes the rescue of Chris, who was kidnapped in episode 7 by Russian special agents.

The episode reveals two things: Hirsch was actually a member of the Hogue Institute, where Dr. Skinner created Hapuna. However, she explains that the scientist never told the researchers there about the painkiller. Furthermore, Team Lazarus discovers that Chris was a Russian special forces agent. However, because she defected, Inga—a former colleague from the agency—kidnaps her. With that, the team decides to rescue her.

Oil field rescue mission

With the help of Elaina, who is at a Norwegian observatory, the group infiltrates the oil field where the Russians are holding Chris. However, they end up engaging in a battle with the Russian agents. The tied-up member of the group manages to free herself and fight Sergei, one of the agents. After knocking him unconscious, she escapes the scene and finds Axel.

In addition to the hand-to-hand combat, there was also an exchange of gunfire between the Lazarus team members and the Russian special agents. The episode features action and explains Chris's past. After a plane crash, he fakes his death and changes his face to abandon his agent identity. It's also revealed that Chris once had a deep connection with Inga. Therefore, when the former agent fakes her death and leaves, Inga, feeling betrayed and hurt by the abandonment, promises to kill her with her own hands.

The episode features a camaraderie among the Lazarus group that goes beyond the search for Dr. Skinner.

At the end of the episode, as Chris and Inga seem to be over their past hurts, Sergei appears. Angered by their closeness, he calls Inga a traitor and shoots her. Immediately after killing her, Sergei is ready to shoot Chris. However, Axel arrives and manages to detain the Russian agent.

The group's decision to save Chris clearly demonstrates their camaraderie over the course of the episodes. It also demonstrates that Hirsch isn't as insensitive as he appears to be from the beginning of the anime.

Now, with 12 days to go before Hapuna takes effect and causes the population's demise, the mystery surrounding Dr. Skinner grows ever deeper. After all, we still don't know if the painkiller is truly deadly to humans, and if so, the reason for its creation has yet to be revealed. Skinner was always seen as a good-hearted person; could he have truly set this trait aside out of hatred for humanity?

The next episode will premiere on June 1st, and will likely follow the team again as they attempt to discover Dr. Skinner's whereabouts. The anime is available on the MAX streaming platform, with Portuguese dubbing.
