Lazarus Ep. 9: The Investigative Committee

In episode 9 of Lazarus , released on June 1st, the team pauses their search for Dr. Skinner and is evaluated by an Investigative Committee that questions his existence. Additionally, Skinner makes a new statement and reveals that Hapuna's patient zero is only ten days away from dying.

At the beginning of the episode, Abel, founder of Lazarus and director of the NSA, participates in an Investigative Committee tasked with questioning the team's actions and its very existence. The committee discusses the disastrous missions and mentions that the group's actions, thus far, have no direct connection to the goal of capturing Skinner. Those present on the committee allege that in the last mission, in which the team rescues Chris, Lazarus failed to fulfill his primary commitment: finding the scientist.

Leland is called to testify against the Lazarus team

During the Commission of Inquiry, the anime reveals that Leland was acting as a spy within the team. Therefore, the committee calls him as a witness to testify against Lazarus. However, to the surprise of those present, the boy declares that the team is, in fact, looking for Dr. Skinner. He also explains that Chris is a key player in the group's mission. Therefore, rescuing her was also an important step in continuing their search for the scientist.

As soon as Leland finishes his testimony, it's revealed that Dr. Skinner has made a new statement. The scientist reminds us that Hapuna's effects are only a few days away and reprimands humanity for its lack of concern. Interestingly, it seems Skinner genuinely wants to be found. At one point in his statement, he reflects that the world's governments are acting as if nothing had happened. Furthermore, he points out that countries continue to fight over territorial waters in the Arctic and drive everyone towards war.

With this statement, it's likely that Skinner's intention in creating Hapuna was, in fact, to unite humanity in search of a cure. Furthermore, the scientist may have wanted to show people how fragile they are, and that, in the face of death, all conflicts and desires for possession are irrelevant. At the end of the statement, Dr. Skinner reveals that he is Hapuna patient number zero and that he has only ten days left until his death. Thus, with time against humanity, the committee allows the Lazarus team to temporarily resume operations.

The ghost man called Soryu

At the Investigative Committee, a man named Schneider, from the Army Intelligence Department, who is after Axel Gilberto, discovers that he is part of the Lazarus team. With this, he decides to hire Soryu, a man they call a ghost, to capture Axel.

However, Schneider decides to test Soryu's capabilities before hiring him. So, to prove his skill, the man fights a special forces unit. With only a knife and a line, Soryu exterminates everyone who gets in his way. The scene highlights his skills and also confirms the trouble the Lazarus team will face if this man goes after them. And at that moment, a confrontation between Axel and Soryu, interesting as it may seem, will delay the search for Dr. Skinner.

The fight scene, as usual, doesn't disappoint. Furthermore, in this episode, they replaced the usual and fun Jazz, one of the anime's trademarks, with a slightly more tense score during the confrontation between Soryu and the special forces unit.

It's likely that in the next episode, Soryu will go after Axel to capture him. This means another day may pass without the team being able to locate Dr. Skinner. Episode 10 will be released next Sunday, June 8th, on the MAX streaming platform and could feature one of the anime's best fights.
