We finally have the first box office data released for the film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary, which had a strong debut in Brazil. The film grossed a little over 3 million reais (equivalent to 1 million and 400 thousand dollars), bringing 250 thousand people to theaters on its opening weekend.
The number is much higher than the Japanese premiere. Compared to other films in the series, Abel's film in the 1990s drew 500,000 people on its opening weekend (and that was during the series' golden age here), while Heaven's Prologue in 2006 drew around 50,000 people on its opening weekend. This number is also much higher than the Dragon Ball Z film's Brazilian premiere in 2013.
Interestingly, the new film sold 2,000 tickets in pre-sale alone.
Overall, Knights came in second place in box office receipts in Brazil, losing only to Hercules (which is already in its second week). It was better than Lucy and the debut of The Giver, securing the “title” of best debut of the weekend.
