Mangadex has undergone its largest content removal action from the creation of the platform. More than 700 series of manga were taken into certain languages after an unprecedented volume of DMCA notifications sent by publishers and copyright holders.

Removed content includes popular titles such as Bleach, Dragon Ball, Light Light Solo, Oshi No Ko and My Dress-Up Darling. Publishers sent requests directly to Mangadex and Google to limit the visibility of the works hosted illegally.

Publishers intensify combat scanlations

The coordinated action involved publishers from Japan, South Korea and other regions, such as Kodansha, Shogakukan, Naver, Lezhin, Suiseisha, Square Enix, among others. All claimed copyright violations.

The works withdrawn are licensed in some languages, especially English. However, users reported that notifications also reached unlicensed titles, which expanded the repercussion between the platform's public.

Removal has affected content in several languages, but administrators promised to restore reading markers and chapter listings as soon as the technical feature returns to work. In the meantime, users will need to wait to access the full list of removed titles.

Communication tries to clarify users

A Mangadex Official Forum moderator clarified that the measure is not linked to the new policy of the translation group abusive profits. The companies sent formal notifications, so the platform removed the chapters.

He pointed out that this was the first time Mangadex faced a removal of this proportion. However, before, requests used to be punctual, usually coming directly from authors or the Naver platform, known for their rigorous actions.

The new rules of the platform have been released recently. They prohibit groups of promoting paid content and restrict the use of external platforms with official material or third parties without authorization. The goal is to avoid abuse and keep the site as an open, free and sustainable space.

Repercussion follows after closure of Reaper Scans

Shortly after Kakao Entertainment issued a cease and giving up notification, Reaper Scans ended the activities, and then publishers targeted Mangadex with new actions.

According to Similarweb data, Reaper Scans has had 36 million hits in the last three months. In the same period, Mangadex registered 188.5 million, almost 69 million in April alone.

The impact of content withdrawal promises to be even greater than visa with the closure of Reaper Scans. Mangadex users express concern for continuing access to unlicensed titles, while publishers reinforce the legal protection of their works.
