A question that's certainly been going around in the geek world is: are manga better than comics?! So, let's try to answer that, as the giant NPD BookScan conducted its survey of the 20 best comics of December 2021! Now, without further ado, let's get to the news:

Manga x Comics

First, let's clarify what each of them is. Both are basically comics, but manga comes predominantly from Japan and comics from the United States. However, the differences don't end there, with a complete comic arc lasting around 5 to 7 issues. As we all know, a manga can range up to over 300 volumes! Furthermore, the Japanese always try to convey the characters' emotions clearly. On the other hand, comics focus much more on action and storytelling.

In terms of adaptations, manga generally stands out for its anime, but it also attracts a lot of attention in theaters, such as the recent successes of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. In contrast, comics have focused much more on film than on animation.

Ultimately, these are two sides of the same coin, and there's no shortage of fan debate. DC and Marvel have always clashed with manga, but perhaps they can't hold a candle to Japan. That's what we'll see now:

So, as we can see from the research, it's clear that manga dominates the list! Furthermore, this wasn't an isolated incident in December of last year, but rather a fairly common occurrence in the industry. In other words, based on this data, it's far from straightforward to say that manga is better than comics, but it does show that in terms of success and profit, manga is outpacing the American genre!
