Masasumi Kakizaki will release a manga about World War II

The April issue of Shogakukan 's Monthly Shonen Sunday announced on Wednesday (12) that author Masasumi Kakizaki will launch a new manga on May 12, 2025.

The story is called Kyokuhoku no Geroi (Geroi in the Arctic), and it is set in Shumshu , a location near the northernmost tip of the Kuril Islands . It will tell the story of the front lines of the war against the United States and the Soviet Union .

The Battle of Shumshu, which took place from August 18 to 23, 1945, became known as the last battle of World War II . Check out the promotional image from the manga:

About the works of Masasumi Kakizaki

Kakizaki's last story was the manga Yomotsuhegui: Shisha no Kuni no Kajitsu (Yomotsuhegui: Scions of the Underworld) serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Young Magazine from 2021 to 2023.

His most famous work is Rainbow: Nisha Rokubo no Shichinin (Rainbow: The Seven from Block 2, Cell 6). The author published the manga in Weekly Young Sunday from 2002 to 2000. He later transferred its serialization to Big Comic Spirits from 2009 to 2010.

The story takes place in 1955 , where six boys committed crimes and ended up in the Shonan Special Reformatory, block 2, cell 6 .

Rainbow follows the lives of the boys during their time in reformatory and the years after they leave, highlighting the struggles that the lower class faced in post-war .

The creator divided the manga into four story chapters, with chapter one taking place between 1955 and 1956. Chapter two takes place in 1957 and 1958. Chapter three takes place between 1960 and 1964. And the last chapter shows events from the past between 1953 and 1955 and the present, between 1964 and 1968.

The cities of Tokyo and Shonan are the main settings for the characters' story.
