The film was originally scheduled for release this year, but has been delayed. Along with the February delay announcement, the film's crew also announced that Takahiro Sakurai will no longer reprise his role as the Medicine Salesman as originally planned.

Twin Engine said in a statement:

The film "MONONOKE" is set in Ōoku (historically the women's quarters of Edo Castle) and attempts to portray women's suffering and the need for medicine. Considering the story's perspective, we decided to change the Medicine Seller's cast.

As previously announced, Kenji Nakamura will return to direct the Mononoke film, with Twin Engine producing. New team members include:

  • Animation Production: EOTA
