In the year 7 of the Kowa era, in the former Hokkaido Bloc of United Japan, occupied by the Neo-Britannic Empire, there lived two mercenary brothers known as the "Nana Mercenaries." Ash, the older brother, possessed exceptional abilities and was highly skilled in piloting Nightmare Frames, while Rose, the younger brother, was a brilliant intellectual, tasked with intelligence gathering and strategic command. For four years, they fought the liberation operation of the Order of the Black Knights, led by the 100th Emperor, Calis Al Britannia, and his direct knights, including Noland, against the impenetrable fortress known as Citunpevalia, which possesses an energy barrier. Once again, they sought to plunge the world into turmoil. But at the request of the Japanese resistance of the Seven-Colored Star, Rose and Ash joined them to confront the Neo-Britannic Empire and retrieve Empress Sakuya.

Finally, the original anime premiered in 2006, followed by a sequel in 2008. In addition, the animation inspired several mangas and OVAs, including a spin-off that premiered in 2012.
