Ghost in the Shell Synopsis:
The story takes place in the 21st century, where the line between humans and machines is becoming increasingly blurred, with people dependent on mechanical implants and robots integrating human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi hunts the most cunning terrorists and cybercriminals, including "ghost hackers" who manipulate the human/machine interface and reprogram humans to be puppets in their crimes. However, when Major Kusanagi follows the digital trail of one such hacker, the Puppeteer, she finds herself in a world beyond information and technology, where she questions the very essence of consciousness and the human soul.
Production IG released the Ghost in the Shell films in 1995, followed by the 2004 sequel Innocence, and the 2002 anime series Stand Alone Complex. In 2013, the prequel OVA Ghost in the Shell: Arise was released. Finally, in April 2017, the series received a live-action adaptation, starring Scarlett Johansson.
