During E3 2016, Sony officially revealed the long-awaited PlayStation 4 upgrade. The new model, titled PlayStation 4 NEO , hits the market as an improved version of the current console, focusing on power and performance.
New PlayStation 4 NEO brings 4K support
Although the PlayStation 4 NEO won't be officially unveiled at E3, the company has confirmed the device's technical specifications. As announced, the console will feature significant improvements to both the CPU and GPU. The CPU will increase from 1.6 GHz to 2.1 GHz, while the GPU will double its capacity, increasing from 18 to 36 compute units.
Additionally, the console's memory remains at 8GB of GDDR5, but now with a bandwidth of 218GB/s, compared to the original PS4's 176GB/s. This certainly represents a direct response to the graphical advancements required by today's games and the 4K resolution that will be natively supported.
Both consoles will coexist in the market
In an interview with the Financial Times , Andrew House, president of Sony Entertainment, stated that the new console will not replace the current one. On the contrary, both will continue to be sold side by side. According to him, "consumers are accustomed to rapid innovation cycles due to smartphones and PCs," which motivated the company to offer two options within the same generation.
Although the exact price has not been disclosed, House confirmed that the PS4 NEO will retail for over $350. However, all games will remain compatible with both versions and will eventually receive graphical improvements on the new hardware.
So, if you already own a PS4, don't worry: Sony guarantees continuity without exclusion. But if you want to fully exploit the graphical power of new titles, the NEO is an excellent choice.
