The director of the film Akira, Jaume Collet-Serra , released news about the Cyberpunk film production to the Coming Soon . According to the filmmaker, the only way to adapt Akira is to take the spirit of the story and do it.
In other words, the film will be completely different from the manga, just like its 1988 anime version produced by Katsuhiro Otomo .
He further adds:
“I hope I can bring good characters to the story. In the manga, I don't believe the protagonists are the main characters. In fact, no one is interesting. Tetsuo becomes important because bad things happen to him and Kaneda is very two-dimensional. This is part of Japanese culture, we don't see great characters - they are used to move the story and philosophy of the material forward.”
The director also spoke about fidelity to the manga and anime. “ I don't think you can make a film about Akira and expect everyone to understand. You have to make three or four films in one and put the essence of the story there. If you're a fan, you already know what it's about and you'll see that it's part of the same world. Simplifying would be a mistake. I think that if a character tries to explain something about the plot to the audience at the end of the second act we have a problem. [Akira] It's more like an existential opera. It's something that can only be explained in the manga. Even the anime is hard to follow .”
At some time ago, actor Garrett Hedlund (Pacific Rin) was linked to the project. In the first rumors about the adaptation, the story would take place in Neo-Manhattan instead of Neo-Tokyo and would feature Ken Watanabe and Kristen Stewart. More news soon.
