NieR: Automata takes place in the same universe as Nier, a spin-off of Drakengard.
The synopsis reads: The distant future... Invaders from another world attacked without warning, unleashing a new kind of threat: weapons known as "machine lifeforms." Faced with this insurmountable threat, humanity is forced to leave Earth and take refuge on the Moon.
