Nintendo explains low frame rate in Switch 2’s GameChat

During the official announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 , a novelty caught the players' attention: Gamechat, the new voice and video system of the new console. The functionality, which allows calls and screen sharing among friends, impressed by the proposal, but also raised doubts due to the limited visual quality in the first demonstrations.

The low frame rate displayed in video broadcasts caused questions among users. In response, Nintendo explained that the limitation is purposeful. According to company engineers, the priority is to maintain the performance of the games, even with the simultaneous execution of Gamechat.

Strategic decision prioritizes games performance

Takuhiro Dohta, Hardware Director of Switch 2, said GameChat was designed to work with the lowest possible impact on console resources. "The tool runs along with the games, but can not disturb the main experience ," he said in an interview with Gamespot.

Even with advances in the hardware of the new model, Nintendo's engineers decided to impose restrictions on the use of processing by Gamechat. The measure, according to Dohta, takes into account the expected evolution of games over the lifetime of the console, which tend to require more and more graphic and computational power.

This technical choice reflects a strategy already known as PC players. Those who use platforms such as DiscoD often accepts minor transmission failures or slowness to avoid direct gameplay impact. Nintendo, in this context, adopted similar logic to balance resources between game and communication.

Tetsuya Sasaki, the platform's technical director, stressed that the company's focus is on providing a consistent experience. He pointed out that by limiting the use of CPU and GPU by GameChat, the console offers stability even in situations with irregular internet connection.

GameChat will be free until March 2026

Nintendo also confirmed that GameChat will be available for free until March 31, 2026. During this period, users will be able to use the function without signing Nintendo Switch online. From the date, a paid plan will be required to continue accessing the appeal.

Switch 2's new “C” button will give direct access to the tool. With it, players will be able to make voice calls, share the gameplay screen and even participate in video conferences - since they purchase an additional camera accessory, no defined price.

The decision to release the service at no cost in the first year can be a strategy for familiarizing players with the new function and encouraging future adhesion to the online plan. In addition, it creates a competitive differential against rivals such as Xbox and PlayStation, whose voice services require external infrastructure or paid plans.

Pre-sale postponed by uncertainties in the market

The official launch of Switch 2 is scheduled for June 5, 2025. Initially, Nintendo planned to start pre-sale later this week. However, the company announced the postponement of pre-registration due to uncertainties related to import tariffs in the United States.

The basic model should cost $ 450. Nintendo will sell a special package, with digital copy of Mario Kart World, for $ 500. The manufacturer said she was reevaluating economic impacts and possible price changes, which could influence the new start date.

This movement shows that Nintendo closely monitors the macroeconomic scenario and seeks to avoid surprises at the launch. The company has not yet set the date to resume pre-sale, but promises to warn consumers as soon as the conditions allow.

Nintendo Switch 2 will be bet for balanced communication in the future of consoles

Gamechat's introduction marks a relevant change in Nintendo's stance, which historically avoided integrating voice and video resources directly into the consoles. By prioritizing games performance and adopting a conservative approach to resource use, the company maintains its gameplay -focused tradition without ignoring community demands.

At the same time, technical limitation can drive part of the public used to more robust communication tools. However, the promise of stability and uniformity in experience, regardless of network quality, can attract casual players and families - two strategic audiences to Nintendo.

Gamechat's success will largely depend on the acceptance of the public and the evolution of the game ecosystem in the new console. Until then, the company bets on a balance between innovation and performance as an asset to maintain its faithful fan base and gain new users.
