During Nintendo Direct this Friday (12), the Japanese company surprised fans by announcing a special collection of Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Switch. The collection arrives as part of Mario's 40th anniversary celebrations and promises to deliver the original experience with adjustments for modern controls. In addition to the cartridge release, the games will also be available digitally, expanding player options.

Super Mario Galaxy returns to Switch with new collection
Originally released on the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel stood out for revolutionizing the series' gameplay. By exploring scenarios where gravity was a central element, the games won over both audiences and critics, and are still considered some of the franchise's most memorable installments. Now, both games get a new chance to shine on Nintendo's hybrid console, with improved resolution and adapted controls for the Joy-Cons.
Availability and purchase formats
According to Nintendo, both games will be available for purchase both physically and separately on the eShop. This decision expands player access and addresses a point of criticism in the past, as the company had made the first title available on Switch in a very limited format in 2020 as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. At the time, the limited distribution made physical copies rare and highly valuable on the market.
The collection is expected to feature the same content as the original games, but without the barriers previously imposed. This way, new players will have the chance to explore the grandeur of Super Mario Galaxy without access barriers. Furthermore, longtime fans will be able to revisit the starry worlds with improved graphic quality and gameplay adapted to current hardware.

What's new beyond the collection
Nintendo also confirmed the release of new amiibo inspired by the franchise. Among them are a special version of Mario and a Rosalina figure accompanied by the iconic Star Sprites. The collectibles will hit stores in April 2026, reinforcing the calendar of celebrations dedicated to gaming's most famous mascot.
