Studio Ghibli's animation, When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie), after being pre-nominated, managed to be among the five films nominated for an Oscar in the category of best animated film.
The film is based on the novel When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson and has a special tone, as it will likely be the studio's final film. This is due to the announcement of the film division and also largely due to Hayao Miyazaki's retirement. "Omoide no Marnie" was written and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who also provided some of the animation.
The film tells the story of Anna, a somewhat unhappy and lonely girl. One day, while traveling, she gets separated from her mother and finds an abandoned house, where she meets Marnie, with whom she forms a sort of friendship. However, Marnie is very mysterious, making Anna want to discover what secrets she hides.
In addition to When Marnie Was There, the films Anomalisa, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep and the big surprise, the Brazilian Boy and the World, are also competing.
