The @Sandman_AP profile brought back a response from a 2009 interview, in which Eiichiro Oda explains why he didn't want to do romance. According to the manga artist, One Piece is a story for boys who like shonen, not for audiences who enjoy romance.

"I don't draw romance because One Piece is a manga for boys. Female fans ask me to draw romance, but if they want to read that, they should read a shoujo manga; that's not my job. I don't care how many women fall in love with Luffy, but I don't think it would be good if they loved each other."

Synopsis:

The story revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gained a rubber body after eating the magical Gomu Gomu no Mi (the Rubber Fruit). Inspired by his childhood idol, the powerful pirate Red-Haired Shanks, he becomes a pirate and sets sail across the sea to find the mythical treasure, the One Piece, and proclaim himself the Pirate King.
