One Piece – Eiichiro Oda surprises readers with a 21-year-old reference

One Piece 's most devoted fans consistently praise Eiichiro Oda , calling him a genius for creating such a sprawling story and orchestrating it so meticulously. Spoiler alert: Oda then surprised manga readers once again by making a subtle 21-year connection between chapters 1086 and 233.

Is this a coincidence?!????

The latest chapter of One Piece (1086) revealed the names of all the Gorosei after the Marijoa Sabo 's escape . The reveal of their names was a major moment for the series, as the identities of these villains had been hidden for so many years. However, some readers recalled that the Gorosei were introduced exactly 21 years ago in chapter 233. In other words, the manga's author took advantage of this precise time jump to make his reveal.

Chapter 233 released in the 28th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump in 2002, while chapter 1086 released in the 28th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump in 2023. In that sense, it seems like this was something actually planned rather than a coincidence.

Synopsis:

The story revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gained a rubber body after eating the magical Gomu Gomu no Mi (the Rubber Fruit). Inspired by his childhood idol, the powerful pirate Red-Haired Shanks, he becomes a pirate and sets sail across the sea to find the mythical treasure, the One Piece, and proclaim himself the Pirate King.

Do you think Oda planned this 21-year connection or was it just a coincidence? Leave your comment below!
