Who would say that a pirate journey started in 1997 would become the best -selling manga in history? One Piece , created by Eiichiro Oda , was born with a much more modest goal: lasting only five years. But today, almost three decades later, the adventure is still firm - and better than ever.

In a Question and Answer Session (SBS) in the manga volume 42, released in 2006, a fan asked if Oda had already thought at the end of the story. The answer surprised: “ Originally, I planned that One Piece lasted five years. I had the climax defined from the beginning, I was just walking to him… but I underestimated time. It's been nine years and I don't even know how long our pirates will follow there! ”
Changes of Plans in One Piece
Good thing the plan changed. By extending the work, Oda managed to build one of the most complex and rich worlds of the manga. Each island visited by the straw hats has its own culture, politics, economics and legends. They are not just scenarios, but living parts of a narrative full of layers.
Now, with the arc of Elbaf underway - home to the giants and full of secrets about the lost century - the plot reaches a new level. The wall of Chapter 1138, for example, connects events that go back to skypie, hundreds of chapters ago, showing how Oda plans everything in the smallest detail.
As long as it may be, one piece makes each chapter worth it. Time has become an ally of the work, allowing bright forshadowings and revelations that make readers return to old pages with other eyes.
