What is Gear?
The word Gear refers to a technique used by Luffy to enhance his movements and attacks, giving him more power. However, Luffy activates these transformations at specific moments, during fights against powerful villains. Therefore, each evolution of a new Gear represents a higher level of power.
In the anime, the first time fans saw Luffy use the technique — Gear 2nd — was in the Enies Lobby , in a fight against Blueno, in episode 272. Gear 3rd is revealed in the Enies Lobby arc, specifically in episode 288. Its appearance is revealed in episode 304, in a fight against Rob Lucci .
After 9 years, Luffy activates Gear 4th for the first time in 3 different forms: Boundman , Tankman , and Snakeman , each with specific abilities and appearance.
Regarding Luffy's Gear 5
In this case, Gear 5 represents the " awakening " of his Akuma no Mi (Devil Fruit). There are three types of Devil Fruits: Paramecia , Logia , and Zoan . The awakening of each represents the maximum potential of that fruit and varies according to the type. Therefore, despite being incredibly strong, Luffy was just a normal pirate.
But his transformation into Gear 5 changed all that. Luffy is the only character in the entire series to have a Devil Fruit that can change its properties after awakening. What was thought to be a common Devil Fruit turned out to be a Mythical Zoan. The Gorosei referred to this fruit as the "most ridiculous power in the world."
Where to watch the new season
Gear 5 premiered in episode 1071 on August 6th in Japan. In Brazil, the episode was released on August 5th at 11 PM on Crunchyroll .
