YenPress : At the end of the story, we have Hachiman and Yukino together. Was that planned from the beginning, and did you ever consider other possible "routes," even though Hachiman never had that accident on the first day?
Watari: In the beginning, I always knew the story was like a perfect plot, a perfect plan, those " What if?" moments , they can fully exist, but no matter what happens in the other arcs, Yukino holds a special place in Hachiman's heart. Let's say, for example, that he takes a different path and ends up with a different girl: I think she (Yukino) would be the girl who, if he died and had a funeral, would be the first to go in and cry in front of his photo. Even if he didn't have a romantic interest, she would be a special character to Hachiman.
YenPress : Haruno Yukinoshita as a character is intriguing and can be difficult to figure out. Do you think she's a good person?
Watari: That's a difficult question to answer (laughs). Haruno loves her sister Yukino , but that love is a bit distorted in some ways. Actually, it comes from my mother. She's from a family of three brothers, and including her, all the brothers were friendly with each other. But sometimes, they can be horrible to each other, and I have a feeling that the Yukino-Haruno is in line with my mother's.
YenPress : On social media, you use Komachi Hikigaya as your profile picture. Do you have any particular attachment to Komachi, and if so, what makes him special?
Watari: The reason it's Komachi and not the others is because if I chose one of those characters, it would start a war, right? Anyway, I chose Komachi. But at the same time, the Komachi I got has a cool smile, and with that smile, I can say things without being a bit divisive, right?
Synopsis
Hikigaya is an antisocial person: he doesn't have any friends in high school and has a somewhat distorted outlook on life. He thinks his classmates are a bunch of liars and wishes he wouldn't work in the future.
