YenPress : At the end of the story we have Hachiman and Yukino together. Was this planned from the beginning, and have you thought of other possible “routes”, even if Hachiman never had that accident on the first day?
Watari: In the beginning I always knew that the story was like a perfect plot, a perfect plan, those What If? , they may fully exist, but no matter what may happen in the others' arc, Yukino has a special place in Hachiman's heart. Let's say, for example, that he takes another path and ends up with a different girl: I think she (Yukino) would be the girl that if he died and had a funeral, she would be the first to walk in and cry in front of his photo. Even if he didn't have a romantic interest, she would be a special character to Hachiman.
YenPress : Haruno Yukinoshita as a character is intriguing and can be difficult to figure out. Do you think she is a good person?
Watari: That's a difficult question to answer (laughs). Haruno loves his sister Yukino , but this love is a little twisted in some ways. This actually comes from my mother. She is from a family of three siblings and including her, all the siblings were friendly with each other. But sometimes, they can be horrible to each other and I have a feeling that the Yukino-Haruno is in line with what my mother was like.
YenPress : On social media, you use Komachi Hikigaya as your profile picture. Do you have any particular attachment to Komachi, and if so, what makes it special?
Watari: The reason why it's Komachi and not the others is because if I chose one of those characters, it would start a war, right? anything, I chose Komachi. Komachi drawing I got has a cool smile, and with that smile, I can say things without it being a little divisive, right?
Synopsis
Hikigaya is an antisocial person: the boy doesn't have any friends in high school and has a somewhat distorted view of life. He thinks his classmates are a bunch of liars and wishes not to work in the future.
