Oshi no Ko – Meet the person who inspired Akane’s tragic story

Episode 6 of Oshi no Ko explored, through the character Akane Kurokawa , the hate that artists can face on social media. However, many people may not even know that Akane's tragic story was inspired by the case of Hana Kimura , a Japanese wrestler who committed suicide after suffering relentless online attacks.

Hana Kimura excelled in her wrestling career and partnered with major Japanese brands, but her career ended when she appeared on the Netflix reality show Terrace House . During this time, she fought with another contestant on the show and faced criticism from viewers for also having Indonesian ancestry. All of the criticism questioned her for not being pure Japanese and for the fights on the show.

After receiving so many attacks, Kimura couldn't handle the pressure and committed suicide in 2020, dying at the age of 22. So, it's clear that this case has certain similarities to Akane's story in Oshi no Ko. The character was also severely attacked on social media for a reality show incident, and this took a heavy toll on her mental health.

Synopsis:

The story follows a doctor named Gorou , a fan of a 16-year-old idol named Ai Hoshino . One day, Hoshino shows up at his office, claiming she's pregnant with twins, but her manager tells her to abort the babies. The idol doesn't want to abort; she wants both children. So Gorou promises her a safe delivery. Little does he know that an encounter with a mysterious figure will result in his untimely death, or so he thought. However, upon opening his eyes in his beloved idol's arms, Gorou discovers he's been reborn as Aquamarine Hoshino , Ai's newborn son! With his world turned upside down, Gorou soon discovers that the world of showbiz is full of controversies, where talent doesn't always bring success.

Thus , Akasaka and Yokoyari started the manga in Shueisha 's Salto Jovem in 2020. In addition, volume 12 of the manga was published on March 17, 2023 in Japan.
