Otakus reiterate that they are tired of Isekai

We have a complicated topic to discuss in the ' Isekai ' genre! Did you see that tweet that blew up on X's (Twitter) timeline this week on social media? An anime suddenly shared an opinion about how the anime Sousou no Frieren ( Frieren: Beyond Journey's End ) and Dungeon Meshi ( Delicious in Dungeon ) opened his eyes to how fed up he is with ' Isekai '.

  • 'Frieren' surprises fans by ranking first on MyAnimeList
  • Fans keep alive the hope for a new Tokyo Ghoul anime

For newcomers unfamiliar with the genre, 'Isekai' is a type of light novel, manga, and anime where someone is transported to a different world and has to fend for themselves there, like a fantasy universe or a parallel dimension. It's the kind of story where you explore the new world alongside the protagonist.

However, the controversial statement triggered a real war in the comments section of the post, with some agreeing and others disagreeing on the topic. Critics argued that it's time for a change, that the market is saturated with all kinds of 'Isekai'. But there were those who defended the genre tooth and nail to this day, saying that the quality of an anime cannot be judged solely by its genre.

It's true that lately there's been an explosion of 'Isekai' series and adaptations practically every season. But are they overdoing it? Many people are starting to question the originality and quality of these productions.

Check out the batch of comments:

  • But of course, everyone has their own taste, right? Even with the criticism, there are a lot of people who really enjoy Isekai and will continue to follow it. The important thing is that the anime world is diverse and will always have room for all kinds of stories. So, Isekai will still provide a lot of material for discussion and many people will continue to immerse themselves in these alternative worlds out there!
  • Isekai isn't bad. I generally enjoy reading it if I'm in the mood for a story full of power and fantasy. The problem is how saturated they are, and most are just more of the same, which ends up being tiring.
  • The isekai really went downhill when everyone turned to: "I was a loser in the real world, but then I died and was reborn in this generic fantasy world with a cool ability, now I'm here wandering around aimlessly while all the girls fall in love with me for no reason.".
  • Actually, you don't hate isekai, you just hate that part where you find yourself in the place of a bland protagonist that all the girls adore.
  • I understand the appeal for writers who want to create isekai. It's an easy way to cram all the world-building elements you want into the viewer/reader without forcing it too much, since the protagonist doesn't know anything either. But it ends up seeming like everything revolves around him.
  • I think you've only ever watched generic isekai anime. "Re:ZERO is one of the best of all time.".
  • What you hate is poorly made isekai, which unfortunately encompasses more than 90% of the genre nowadays. Done right, isekai can be sensational.

Hey everyone, I'd like to hear your opinions in the comments here on the AnimeNew website... it's an extremely important topic for us. Finally, feel free to join our WhatsApp channel ! See you there!
