Initial D synopsis
The story takes place in Gunma Prefecture during the 1990s and follows Takumi Fujiwara, an 18-year-old who helps out at his father's tofu shop by making morning deliveries to a hotel on Mount Akina. But for this, he uses his father's car, a Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86). Since he was 13, Takumi has been making these deliveries, honing his driving skills in any weather condition. In “Initial D”, racing on mountain roads, known as Touge, is the main focus. In these races, the car's power is not the only determining factor; The rider's balance, skill and courage are crucial to victory. Touge is divided into two categories: descent (Downhill) and climb (Hillclimb/Uphill). While uphill races depend more on the car's power and the driver's ability to control the acceleration, downhill races require the driver to use refined braking and vehicle control techniques.
Therefore, the manga was adapted into several anime series and OVAs by different studios. In 2005, it even received a live action film produced by Avex and Media Asia. Thus, in April 2021, the manga already had more than 55 million copies in circulation, consolidating itself as one of the best-selling manga of all time.
