Released in Japan in 1996 as Pocket Monsters Blue , the game arrived in the West in September 1998 alongside Pokémon Red Pokémon Blue box stated "Pokémon Red" on the back. This error became known among collectors as the Red Text .
The person responsible for the discovery was Reddit user SausageNPeppers . He said that as a child, he received two copies of Red and two of Blue as Christmas presents. While the Red games were opened and played, one of the Blue copies ended up forgotten in a closet, where it remained sealed for nearly two decades.
When sharing photos on social media, fans noticed that it was precisely the version with the printing error, making the item even more coveted.
Value in the collectors' market
Currently, copies of Pokémon Blue with Red Text sell for hundreds of dollars, even used. On eBay, copies are listed for around $599 in merely "acceptable" condition. A sealed version with a high conservation grade can fetch exorbitant prices: a copy with WATA 9.6 certification is listed for $126,000 .
The owner of the found copy didn't confirm whether he intends to sell the game, but he did reveal that he intends to submit it for official evaluation. Therefore, even a low rating would guarantee a significant value in the Pokémon rarity market.
