Princess Connect! Re:Dive – First Impressions

The new anime is based on the mobile game series "Princess Connect." The game is a real-time RPG where you control stats while battling enemies, both bots and PvP. The game was released in 2015 and ended its service in 2016, but later, the title "Princess Connect! Re: Dive" was announced in 2018 as a sequel and is still active.

Thus belonging to a genre that has become very popular in recent years: isekai . Typically, we have a male hero as the center of the party , being the strongest and protecting his companions. This hero is also summoned from another world to assist or save the world that summoned him from some kind of unusual invasion. However, the supposed hero of Princess Connect has lost a good part of his memories and, as a consequence, depends heavily on his female companions. In contrast, all the members of the newly formed guild are quite skilled and superior in technique to our pseudo-hero.

Due to the turbulence in Yuuki's memories (the only male character in the spoken group), it's unclear who the main character is. According to the story, Yuuki may be a kind of knight of the princess, whom the viewer can assume to be Pecorine, the most powerful female character in the party, possessing attributes worthy of belonging to the royal family. His screen time in combat is much less compared to Pecorine. This is interesting because, whether we like it or not, more commercial anime tend to devalue the female figure and present women through an idealized male lens, so this could be a positive point for those seeking less platonic content.

The goal of the Gourmet Food Palace guild, formed by Yuuki, Kokkoro, Pecorine, and Kyaru, is to search the world for diverse ingredients that can enhance their meals. This goal might seem a bit confusing given the plot , however, only four episodes have been released, so more material is needed for a complete analysis.

Overall, it's a series to watch when you're tired of scrolling through your everyday content list and want a break from "serious" anime with a heavier emotional charge or a higher level of concentration. The animation production is very good and not sloppy: everything is very well drawn, the character design is great, and the characters' abilities are visually very beautiful. It can also be categorized as a comedy anime, being very enjoyable and genuinely funny due to its relatable (situations the viewer identifies with).
