A new leak suggests that the PlayStation 6 (PS6), Sony's next-generation console, may arrive on the market with a highly anticipated feature for fans: an integrated removable disc drive from launch. The information, released by the Insider Gaming portal, indicates that Sony is adopting the strategy used in the PS5 Slim model, but this time ahead of schedule, directly in the initial version of the console.

The detachable disc drive arrived late to the current generation, as Sony did not include it in the PlayStation 5 launch. This absence limited the experience for many users who bought the digital model and then couldn't easily find the accessory. With the PS6, this scenario may change.

Removable disc drive: accessibility and cost savings for gamers and for Sony

Sony will release a digital base version of the PS6 and offer the disc drive as a separate accessory that players can attach later. Alternatively, the traditional version of the console will also be available, already including the disc drive.

According to sources, Sony's main objective is to reduce production costs by avoiding the need to manufacture two separate models. For consumers, this represents flexibility in choice and a more affordable alternative at launch.

Why is this relevant to the players?

Despite the growing popularity of digital versions, many gamers still prefer physical media, whether for resale value, collecting, or storage savings. By allowing the disc to be an optional module, Sony succeeds in offering the best of both worlds: digital convenience and physical freedom.

Furthermore, this approach can facilitate future upgrades and extend the console's lifespan, focusing on modularity.

The PlayStation 6 still doesn't have an official release date, but leaks continue to indicate that the project is in an advanced stage. If the feature is confirmed, it will be one of the most significant design changes since the PS4.
