Reiji Miyajima revealed some details about his sources of inspiration for creating his manga's story and protagonist. As he explains, the author says his personality is similar to Kazuya's in some ways.

"Just like Kazuya, there are things I can't bear, no matter how hard I try, like dealing with pain. I express what I want through Kazuya. As a result, readers tell me the story is funny and relatable, and that helps me emotionally."

Miyajima also said that the idea for Kazuya to be desperate for a girlfriend came from a Chinese article he read. The article discusses how Chinese families pressure their children to introduce a girlfriend for the New Year. This idea inspired the author to develop the main plot of his manga.

"Their desire to reassure their parents seems genuine, but I'm sure they also want to show off. These mixed feelings are what make Kazuya."

Synopsis:

Shortly after a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Mami Nanami, Kazuya Kinoshita decides to rent a rental girlfriend named Chizuru Ichinose. As a result, he soon finds himself having to continue renting Chizuru to keep up appearances with his family and friends.
