(REVIEW) Sword Art Online: Progressive – Aria of a Starless Night

Arthur Vinicius
I'm a technology enthusiast and a lover of anime, manga, and games. The vast majority of anime I enjoy belong to the Shounen demographic.

How about checking out this super special post here: (REVIEW) Sword Art Online: Progressive. The newest film in the renowned Sword Art Online has arrived in Brazilian cinemas, promising to retell the events of the Aincrad arc, but this time from the perspective of the character Asuna Yuuki .

(REVIEW) Sword Art Online: Progressive

Narrative

First, the fan-favorite arc is likely the Aincrad arc, where thousands of players find themselves trapped in a true "death game" in Sword Art Online, their only choice being to complete the game.

Thus, the arc returns in this new film, this time promising to be infinitely more detailed. In fact, this is likely to be the case, considering the film only adapted up to the end of the second episode of the original anime. In other words, it will still take a long time for this film trilogy to be completed.

Asuna

On the other hand, it's undeniable that the character Asuna becomes somewhat "faded" as the SAO anime progresses, since Kirito steals almost all the spotlight for himself. Therefore, it's extremely commendable on the author's part to give the character more prominence now.

Right from the start, we are introduced to a character who doesn't have a good family structure, suffering intense pressure despite always getting excellent grades and being hardworking. As soon as the "death game" begins, the character appears mentally fragile, but as the film progresses, we see her take shape and become the "Lightning" Asuna that fans are used to seeing.

Asuna and Mito

Sword Art Online

Within just a few minutes of the film, we are introduced to the new character Mito, making her first appearance in the franchise. Mito is a true gaming addict, even participating in regional tournaments. Furthermore, she's the one who gets Asuna to play Sword Art Online.

Furthermore, she's the one who helps Asuna develop her swordsmanship skills in the deadly game. The two go through a turbulent situation in the film. However, it's chilling at the end when Asuna shows no resentment towards her friend, demonstrating gratitude for everything she taught her.

Regarding the development of Mito's character, I felt it fell a little short. She's only introduced as "the girl who's amazing at games." But that was basically all; perhaps in future films the character will be explored in more depth.

Asuna and Kirito

Sword Art Online

I confess that, being a big fan of the Black Swordsman, I was quite apprehensive that the character Kirito wouldn't have a prominent role in this new film. But he appears when needed, acting this time more as a supporting character.

Furthermore, it's worth remembering that despite having plenty of action, Sword Art Online has always been a work that leaned towards the romance between these two. Moreover, this romance is ABSURDLY better developed, as we see the exact moment they met and the bond between them being formed. The ending of the film is perhaps the biggest difference from the anime, leaving fans who are passionate about this couple eager for the sequel.

(REVIEW) Sword Art Online: Progressive – Conclusion

Sword Art Online

Finally, this is undoubtedly the ultimate experience for those already passionate about the series. It allows us to give greater depth to the fascinating character of Asuna, and above all, it provides a true revision here and there of certain points in the Aincrad arc.

Not to mention, of course, the presence of singer LiSA, whose voice is already iconic in anime music. And, as expected, studio A-1 Pictures is doing an excellent job.

And you, have you already seen the movie in theaters?
