It was in the early hours of the morning that the nerd world was shocked, a statement released on Tuesday night made Spider-Man within the Marvel cinematic universe.

The agreement is that the character will appear in a Marvel Studios film, and then Sony Pictures will release a new Spider-Man film on July 28, 2017, co-produced by Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and Sony's Amy Pascal. The idea is to take the hero in a different "creative direction" on the big screen. Sony will continue to own the rights to Spider-Man (whose franchise is estimated to be worth $4 billion), as well as finance, distribute, and have final say on any Spider-Man film.

At the moment there is no official information on whether or not Andrew Garfield will remain in the role (most speculate that he will not), but Deadline states that Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, the former producers of the franchise, will continue to be involved in the hero's films and should be announced soon as executive producers.

The statement doesn't say which Marvel film Spider-Man will make his debut in, but Marvel Studios has announced new release dates for its films through 2019: Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, 2017), Black Panther (July 6, 2018), Captain Marvel (November 2, 2018) and Inhumans (July 12, 2019). The Wall Street Journal says who Spider-Man is expected to appear in Captain America: Civil War, as previously speculated.
