Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: The truth about Shisui

Episode 17 of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto , released on May 2, reveals Maomao's location and reveals information about Shisui's true identity. Jinshi also receives information about the disappearance of the new eunuch, who is actually Suirei.

Previously, once Maomao discovered that the new eunuch was actually Suirei, she was forced to follow the former servant to the outer reaches of the Imperial Palace; otherwise, Shisui would suffer the consequences. In the current episode, the apothecary accompanies Suirei, unaware of their destination, but a puzzling situation catches her eye.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Maomao discovers part of Shisui's secret

The novel "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto" doesn't disappoint when it comes to building the mystery that surrounds the narrative. Maomao has long been suspicious of Shisui. It's worth remembering that in the episode "Haunted Story," the protagonist noticed a certain familiarity in the character's appearance.

Furthermore, in the previous episode, Maomao reflected on Shisui's ownership of an expensive book and also on his ability to read and write, something rare among servants. This makes it clear that every detail mentioned or shown in the narrative could be important in the future, just as the work has been so far.

Returning to the current episode, as they walk to their final destination, Maomao notices that Suirei is afraid of a snake in the forest. However, what really catches the apothecary's attention is the fact that Shisui tries to defend Suirei, which is very strange, since she was the one who threatened and forced the girl to go with them.

Maomao, who quickly becomes suspicious of Shisui's behavior, tells the two that she's already noticed they know each other. The girl then reveals that she's Suirei's sister. However, the protagonist reflects that, although she can't say for sure, "maybe Shisui is..." The problem is that she doesn't finish the sentence, as she continues on her way, leaving the thought aside to further pique the viewer's curiosity about the girl's identity.

When they arrive at their destination, Maomao realizes it's a village. There, the apothecary realizes that Shisui and Suirei seem to be well known by the locals. She also discovers that one of the foreign envoys, who appeared in the episode "Spirit of the Moon," is in the village. However, the reason remains a mystery.

Jinshi discovers that there is something wrong with the new eunuch and Shisui

After Maomao disappears from the Inner Palace, Jinshi and Gaoshun search for clues to find her. They discover that the school that educates imperial servants was the last place they saw her. In search of more information, the two approach the girl's adoptive father, Luomen, who is currently acting as the Palace's temporary physician.

Luomen discovers that Maomao left the Palace's health center with a medicine whose scent attracts cats, and consequently, the cat, also named Maomao, followed the girl part of the way. While searching for the cat, Luomen notices a piece of paper hidden in a tree.

Apparently, the paper is blank. However, the apothecary's adoptive father knows that the girl may have used tea or juice to write on the paper, and both materials only appear when the sheet is heated. When the ideograms appear, Jinshi cannot understand their meaning, as Maomao appears to have written them in a hurry, which makes the writing confusing.

Jinshi takes the paper to Consort Gyokuyo, seeking help from her and the Jade Palace's ladies-in-waiting. Only one of the three sisters, ladies-in-waiting who recently entered the Palace, seems to understand one of the ideograms. She suggests that the symbol could mean "sui" and associates it with Shisui. Since Jinshi doesn't seem to know who this person is, the lady-in-waiting clarifies that it is one of the servants who accompanies Maomao on certain occasions.

In the episode's final scene, Gaoshun reveals to Jinshi that there is no servant named Shisui in the records. He also informs her that one of the Palace eunuchs has also disappeared. Furthermore, before the chapter ends, a eunuch appears to report something about Consort Gyokuyo. However, the ending begins before viewers understand what it's about. Spoiler: in the manga, the consort goes into labor, so it's likely the eunuch will mention it.

The mysteries connect one by one and deliver a solid, well-constructed narrative.

Many characteristics underpin Kusuriya no Hitorigoto , and the script is one of them. There's no denying that the plot is very well constructed. Furthermore, the details and mysteries connect, making the work solid and without loose ends. Despite the lack of explanation in some points, it's likely that everything will be addressed in the future, as, so far, the work has shown that nothing is left behind.

Beyond the script, it's undeniable that the animation, produced by Toho , is beautiful. The vibrant colors, character design, and the detail in each scene complement the work. Furthermore, there's the protagonist, who, in and of herself, wins over viewers with her unique style.
