While anime fans haven't yet seen this character in action, those who have read the manhwa already know his true magnitude. Considered the strongest among the Monarchs, his story goes far beyond his impressive abilities.
From Loyalty to Rebirth in Solo Leveling
Initially, Ashborn was not a Monarch, but rather one of the Rulers who fought the Monarchs in an endless war. The battle was commanded by a supreme entity called the Absolute Being , who saw the conflict as mere entertainment. When the Rulers realized they were being manipulated, they rebelled against their creator.
Ashborn, however, remained loyal to the Absolute Being and was defeated by his former allies. In his final moments, he discovered that the Absolute Being had granted him monstrous power as a reward for his loyalty. Thus, he was reborn as the Shadow Monarch and vowed to continue the fight, but it was too late: the Absolute Being had been killed, and the war had taken a new turn.
The legacy and the choice of a successor
With superior abilities, Ashborn quickly became feared by both Rulers and Monarchs. However, internal betrayals led him to abandon the war, leaving the Monarchs vulnerable. Later, he decided to find a worthy successor and descended to the human world.
To this end, he made a pact with Kandiaru , a mage who created "The System," a mechanism designed to find the ideal human to inherit the power of the Shadow Sovereign. That human was Sung Jinwoo , who proved to be strong enough to bear such a responsibility.
In the War of the Monarchs arc, Ashborn recognized Jinwoo's potential and bestowed his Black Heart , sealing his succession. Jinwoo himself had an encounter with Ashborn in a vision, where he finally understood the true nature of his power.
The Future of the Shadow Monarch
While the rulers sent Sung II-Hwan to kill Jinwoo, believing Ashborn still stood against them, the new Shadow Monarch's victory over his enemies proved his intention to protect humans. Thus, Jinwoo followed Ashborn's legacy and destroyed the Monarchs who threatened the weak.
Ashborn may be gone, but his impact echoes throughout Solo Leveling . With Jinwoo now carrying on his legacy, the fate of the world will never be the same.
