Sonic the Hedgehog is about to invade the Magic: The Gathering universe with an unprecedented collaboration. Starting July 14th, fans will be able to purchase three new Secret Lair collections inspired by the blue hedgehog and his companions.

These editions are part of the “Sonic Superdrop,” a special release that will feature never-before-seen cards, reinterpretations of classics, and exclusive visuals. Additionally, the content will be available for a limited time through the official Magic Secret Lair website, in both regular and holographic versions.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends and Foes features never-before-seen cards and iconic characters

The first of the three collections is called Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends and Foes. It features seven brand-new cards showcasing classic characters from the Sonic franchise. Highlights include Sonic himself, Shadow, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, and Knuckles. The set also includes a legendary aura called Super State, representing the heroes' maximum power state.

This edition will be available in two versions: a standard (non-shiny) version for US$39.99 and a rainbow foil finish version for US$49.99. Therefore, the collection promises to be a standout item for both collectors and casual players who appreciate the crossover between geek culture and card games.

Turbo Gear transforms classic artifacts with the style of the Sonic universe

The second collection, Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear, is dedicated to artifacts, elements frequently used in Commander format strategies. Furthermore, the cards included have been reimagined with aesthetics inspired by SEGA games, without losing their functionality on the battlefield.

Items like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves get themed versions as Air Shoes and Power Sneakers. Meanwhile, the Myr Battlesphere, Hammer of Nazahn, and The Reaver Cleaver appear with designs based on characters and weapons from the franchise. The classic Weatherlight vehicle, for example, is reinterpreted as the Tornado plane, piloted by Tails in the series' adventures.

This edition will also be available in non-foil format for US$29.99 and rainbow foil for US$39.99.

Chasing Adventure blends classic spells and unique artwork

Closing out the trilogy of releases, Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure focuses on support cards and spells that are important for various formats. There are six cards and one token that stand out for both their gameplay and unique visual style.

Among the highlights are Generous Gift, Open the Armory, Fabricate, Deadly Dispute, Unexpected Windfall, and a Sol Ring with artwork by Evan Stanley, a renowned artist associated with Sonic comics. Additionally, the included token is a Treasure token and depicts one of the golden rings floating in the classic Green Hill Zone, a nostalgic setting from the franchise.

Global launch and impact for collectors

The three editions will be available for purchase starting at 9 AM (Pacific Time) on July 14th, exclusively on the official Secret Lair website. As is customary with these special releases, the sets will be available for a limited time, which should heat up the market for collectors and fans of both franchises.

This is the first time Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared in the Magic: The Gathering universe, and the initial reception from the community has been quite positive. Thus, the crossover marks a new phase in Wizards of the Coast's expansion strategies, betting on collaborations with icons of geek culture to attract new audiences.
