According to an interview with Sega CEO Sammy Holdings, it was announced that the company has joint plans with Sony Pictures to create a live-action/animated Sonic the Hedgehog film. The film is expected to premiere in 2018.

Currently, Sonic Boom, produced by French company OuiDo! Productions, premiered on Cartoon Network in 2014 and was accompanied by two new video games: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Wii U and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for Nintendo 3DS. A game called Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will be released for Nintendo 3DS in September of this year.

In 1996, SEGA released an OVA called Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.
