Sony Group Corporation has just taken a strategic step into the otaku universe: it acquired a 2.5% stake in Bandai Namco for 68 billion yen—approximately $500 million. This partnership marks a new phase for the Japanese giants, which intend to strengthen ties between games and anime , particularly in franchises like Dragon Ball , One Piece , and My Hero Academia .

Partnership aims to increase anime's global reach

This partnership between Sony and Bandai Namco didn't come out of nowhere. The two companies already had a history of collaboration, but now, with direct investment, the plan is to deepen the synergy between their areas of expertise. As previously announced, the goal is to expand the influence of Japanese IPs (intellectual property) globally, integrating gaming experiences, animations, and licensed products.

Furthermore, the movement also seeks to support new creators and deliver experiences that thrill fans, leveraging Sony's technology combined with Bandai Namco's "IP Axis" strategy. This strategy aims to deliver the right products, at the right time, in the most promising markets—all based on the strength of franchises.

Expansion of the anime industry is a priority

As company leaders point out, the focus is on maximizing franchise value and consolidating anime as a global form of entertainment. Undeniably, the sector has gone from being a niche to becoming a pillar of pop culture worldwide.

Therefore, the merger of forces between Sony and Bandai Namco could further accelerate this transformation, directly impacting the way we consume anime and interact with our favorite franchises.
