Editor Jeff Sneider of The Wrap has just released what appears to be the biggest bombshell regarding the Spider-Man solo film to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which indicates that both Sony and Marvel themselves intend to take a very… bold direction!
During the Meet the Movie Press podcast, which Sneider co-hosts with Mark Reilly of Schmoes Know, the host revealed, "This isn't completely set in stone, but I'm telling you right now: Spider-Man will not be white ." When Reilly asked if this was speculation, he said, "I'm 95 percent sure."
But if he's not white, what ethnicity will he be? Sneider added: "Probably Black. But there's a chance he's Latino. 95% certain he won't be white."
Based on this, two possibilities are the most speculated: Either Marvel/Sony will try to bring Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man of the Ultimate Universe, or Miguel O'Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099. According to Sneider, the reason for this certainty may come from a decision provoked by hate emails sent to Marvel:
"I don't think it will be Peter Parker. I feel strongly—Sony has the opportunity to take on DC and Marvel by bringing in a high-profile Black hero. As I said last week, there were leaked emails that had strong racist overtones. I think that helped decide things."
