Spotify recently revealed to the BBC that almost 70% of global anime music consumption comes from listeners under 29 years old of otaku culture, especially after the 2024 report in partnership with Crunchyroll , which highlighted a 395% growth in anime music streams since 2021.

Furthermore, the number of anime playlists created by users on Spotify jumped from 6.7 million to 7.2 million , although the service has not defined exactly what constitutes an "anime playlist".

Anime music on Spotify: a strategic combination

Two main factors drive this growth: easy access to anime through streaming services and fast-paced channels, and the strong emotional connection they create. Production companies design theme songs with catchy hooks and memorable choruses to go viral on social media, guaranteeing millions of views.

Oshi no ko: Yoasibi

A notable example is the hit “ Idol ” by the duo YOASOBI, the opening theme of Oshi no Ko . The song entered the Apple Music Top 500 and topped the JASRAC royalty revenue chart—the Japanese copyright management organization—for two consecutive periods. The success of “Idol” reinforces the central role that anime songs play in the export of Japanese music.

In a recent interview, Manabu Otsuka , CEO of Studio MAPPA ( Jujutsu Kaisen , Chainsaw Man ), commented on the creation of the MAPPA Records . According to him, the idea is to adapt anime to commissioned music, even adjusting storyboards and scenes.

This fusion of music and storytelling promises to transform the stage as well, with live shows based on popular franchises.
