Fans eagerly awaiting the successor to the Steam Deck may have to wait longer than they anticipated. According to leaker KeplerL2 , Valve may only release the Steam Deck 2 in 2028. While there is no official confirmation yet, the information reinforces the idea that the company only intends to continue the line when there is a truly significant performance leap.

Rumors about the release of Steam Deck 2

The comment surfaced on a NeoGAF , where KeplerL2 responded to speculation about the potential impact of Valve's handheld console compared to the recently announced ROG Xbox Ally . According to him, the second generation of the Steam Deck would arrive six years after the original model and five years after the OLED version.

This long wait wouldn't be surprising, as Valve has stated on other occasions that it doesn't intend to release the new hardware until it guarantees a "generational leap" without compromising battery life.

Competition in the laptop market

Meanwhile, the handheld console scene remains active. Nintendo has already revealed the Switch 2 , and Microsoft has unveiled new handheld models. Furthermore, another rumor suggests that Sony may release a portable PS6 between the end of 2027 and the beginning of 2028, which would create direct competition with the upcoming Steam Deck 2.

Possible news from Valve

In 2024, patents registered by Valve suggested improvements in streaming and even support for virtual reality . However, there are no guarantees that these features will be in the next model, as companies register technologies that don't always reach the market.

For now, players will have to wait for official information — and, if the rumors are true, that wait could be long.
