"We must think about how to close the many doors we left open," Shinkai says as he continues working on the film. "I've given this responsibility to Suzume as she travels around Japan closing various doors. It is my sincere hope that this film leaves its audience with big smiles and emotions when they leave the theater."

Shinkai describes Suzume no Tojimari as a modern adventure story, an action film with a great journey involved.

Synopsis

The story centers on Suzume, a 17-year-old girl from a quiet town in Kyuushuu who meets a young man searching for a door. They find a door inside mountain ruins, and Suzume opens it. Soon, more doors begin to open around Japan, bringing disasters from the other side. The film depicts Suzume's liberation and growth as she closes the doors that are causing disaster.

Shinkai stated that three important points about the film are that it's a journey through Japan, and therefore a story about "closing doors" rather than opening them. He elaborated that closing doors can refer to tying up loose ends or finishing something.
